The Day that Friction Stopped
It was an ordinary Saturday morning, the sun was shining for once and there was not a cloud in the sky. I planned to go out with my friends, but today wasn't to be as perfect as it seemed.
As I stepped onto the pavement outside, I saw some very peculiar things happening. As someone over the road stepped out into their garden, they slipped. Which was strange because the surface of their garden was rough and friction should have acted. They must have had some form of lubricant on their shoes such as ice, oil or dog mess.
Then, as I took another step I too slipped, which was even stranger, as I was wearing trainers with a rough sole and a lot of friction.
"Owww!"  I whined as I scrambled to my feet.
I took another step and slipped again, annoyed I got up. I was determined to go out and have a good time with my friends, but I kept sliding over as if I were on ice.
In the end, I gave up and skidded to the door. Just when I clambered onto the sofa, Mum flicked the BBC News on.
"Scientists are in a panic, as today it appears that friction has stopped. The Russian pole-vaulter Yelena Vovski has injured herself whilst training for the Olympics. As she thrust the pole into the ground and launched herself up into the air, her hands slid off the pole." reported Huw Edwards.
"She fell just short of the crash mat and was admitted to St.Hopes private hospital with minor injuries. We believe the cause to be loss of friction. Also, traffic has piled thanks to loss of friction causing no movement of vehicle tires. The world will remember today as the day that friction stopped" spoke Fiona Bruce.
As she spoke, books and other objects began sliding to one side of the shelf. Tiles fell off roofs with almighty smashes like terracotta rain. I rubbed my hands together hard, but the temperature of my hands was the same as before. Friction really had stopped. But why?
Frightened I struggled up the stairs into my bed on the bottom bunk. I felt safe, because there was cover on all sides except one. We didn't bother about dinner as everything was falling over and breaking. Shreds of glass were everywhere.
As we woke the next morning, I took a shaky step onto my bedroom floor. I could stand! I walked a few paces.
"Friction has returned!" I thought happily to myself.
Nobody ever found out how or why friction stopped and how it returned.
They all remember April 21st as The Day That Friction Stopped.
A story I wrote in Year 7 LOL :D
